The newly appointed Atom B (from Atom C) Brockville Angels, sponsored by the Brick, came up big in their first Atom B Tier 2 tournament in Belleville earlier this month. Facing teams from Peterborough, Kingston, Belleville and Napanee, the Angels went undefeated in their second tournament championship of the season. This team previously won an Atom C tournament in Napanee.
Round robin games started against Peterborough with a 3-0 victory. Emma Michalicka scored the first goal and Veronica Cameron scored the next 2, both assisted by Claire Cushing and Lauren Kerans. In the second game, the Angels had a convincing win over Kingston 8-3 with Gracie Young scoring a hat trick. The scoring was rounded out by Kerans (2), Shauna Morrell, Cushing and Michalicka. Emma Michalicka and Claire Cushing also added 3 assists each and defensemen Kayla MacDonald and Emma Caldwell added 2 assists each. The Brick’s Angels started Saturday with a 7am game at the Royal Canadian Air Force Base in Trenton and caught the tournament hosts still asleep with a 9-1 victory. Scoring was very balanced with 6 different Angels finding the twine – previous goal scorers have already been mentioned, including: Kerans (2), Young, Michalicka and Cushing. Kendra Beattie scored her first goal of the tournament and then her second. And defenseman Emma Caldwell netted 2 goals as well. Great teamwork added up assists for: Alexa Muir, Michalicka, Young, Cushing, Cameron, Morrell and MacDonald.
Sunday morning welcomed the Angels to a semifinal game against Belleville again. In a much closer game, Brockville prevailed 3 - 0 and eliminated the host team from their own tournament. Veronica Cameron, Gracie Young and Kendra Beattie scored for the Angels with Taryn Marshall assisting on 2 goals.
The finals pitted the Brick’s Brockville Angels Atom B team against provincial rivals the Napanee Crunch. It was a hard-fought battle with Brockville claiming victory 3-0 with an empty-net goal in the final minute by Shauna Morrell. Claire Cushing scored the game winning goal and Gracie Young added the insurance goal. Single assists were added by Veronica Cameron and Lauren Kerans. Alex Moulton captured the shut out in the finals as she played solid between the pipes throughout the tournament.
The Brick’s Angels staff Head Coach Mike Michalicka, Assistant Coachs’ Tom MacDonald and Gord Cushing, Trainer Kelly Dillabough and Manager Margaret Cameron are so proud of their team, and thank the parents of this very dedicated team of talented girls playing hockey.
